Jacks Split with CMU

 

The Lumberjack Women's Basketball earned a split with Canadian Mennonite over the weekend winning 66-59 and falling 48-44.

66-59 Win

The Jacks struggled to get the offense going in the first quarter but found their offensive output at the free throw line as Jersey Vogel went a perfect 6-6 at the line to push the Jacks out to a 13-10 first quarter lead.  DCB got things clicking in the second quarter shooting an impressive 75% from the field and outscoring the Blazers 26-18 in the quarter to take a 39-28 lead into the locker-room. Brooke Anderson and Vogel paced DCB with 6 points each in the quarter. The Jacks offense cooled off coming out of the halftime break. This allowed CMU to comeback and tie the game as the teams prepared for the final quarter. The Lumberjack defense showed up big time in the final 10 minutes forcing 9 Blazer turnovers and holding CMU to just 9 points. Kenya Poitra led the Jacks offensive attack with 7 points to help the Jacks prevail 66-59. Vogel led three Lumberjacks in double figures with 22 points. Josie Wintermute shot 6-7 from the floor and scored 12 points off the bench, and Anderson finished with 11 points and one rebound shy of a double-double with 9. Alyssa Doneza led CMU and all scorers with 33 points.

 48-44 Loss

Saturday's game saw a common theme both teams struggled to score through three quarters shooting a combined 24% from the field. The Blazers would grab control late and take a 6-point lead with under a minute remaining. Vogel hit a corner three in the waning seconds to cut the deficit to 3 points and give the Jacks a chance. CMU was able to get the ball inbounded and forced DCB to foul. The Blazers made 1-2 free throws, putting them up by two possessions to secure the 48-44 win. Vogel led the Jacks and all scorers with 20 points; she was joined in double figures by Andeson who scored 14. Talia Vargas pulled down a game high 16 rebounds. Chanelle LaFeniere led the Blazers with 17 points.

The Jacks record moves to 2-7 overall. DCB is next in action next Monday at Mayville State JV.
