Tyree's Buzzer Beater Lifts Jacks Past Royals

MarQuez Tyree would score just before the buzzer Sunday afternoon to help the Lumberjack Men's Basketball team defeat the Lake Region State College Royals 85-83.

The first half saw the Royals take the lead early and be able to keep the Jacks at arms-length the entire half. After 20 minutes, LRSC held a 45-38 lead.  DCB slowly worked their way back to one possession deficit. A 3-pointer from Elijah Reynolds just before the 11-minute mark would give the Jacks their first lead since the very early stages of the game. The Jacks looked like they were in firm control when the lead ballooned to 9 at 69-60 with a little over 7 minutes remaining. The Royals didn't go away, however, closing the gap to just one possession at 71-68. On the ensuing Lumberjack possession Jaden Arzola would hit one of his 8 3-pointers to push the lead back to six at 74-68. The Jacks lead would bounce between one or two possessions down the stretch.

A pair of LRSC free throws with 52 seconds remaining would cut the DCB lead to just one at 83-82. On the ensuing DCB possession the Jacks would fail to score, giving the Royals a chance to take the lead. The Royals would draw a foul with 13.8 seconds remaining and earn a trip to the free throw line. Jeremiah Johnson would connect on the first free throw to tie the game. After a missed second free throw the Jacks would have an opportunity to win the game on the final possession. Edward Lual would get a pass from Elijah Reynolds and have an open lane after a Royal defender jumped a passing lane. Lual found Tyree on the baseline. Tyree took one power dribble and kissed the ball off the glass just before time expired sending the Jack bench into a frenzy. The Jacks took the game 85-83.

Arzola led three Lumberjacks in double figures with 27 points. Reynolds capped off a strong week pouring in 24 points off the bench. Tyree finished with his season high of 16 points. Dalen Leftbear led LRSC with 24 points.

With the win the Jacks improve to 14-5 and 2-0 on the Mon-Dak. DCB caps non-conference action on Wednesday at home against the University of Jamestown JV. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00p.m.
