Battling Back for Victory

This past week the Lumberjacks squared off with two teams that have given them trouble over the past couple of years. On Thursday night, they squared off with North Dakota College of Science Wildcats followed by Lake Region State on Sunday.

In the first match up of the week, the Lumberjacks hosted the Wildcats in the Woodshed. The first half of the game the Lumberjacks went toe to toe with the Wildcats. The halftime score saw the Wildcats up 48-44. The game remained close until about 10 minutes left in the second half when the depth of the Wildcats came around and created a gap that the Lumberjacks were not able to overcome. The final score read Wildcats 107-86. Surafel Berhanie led the Lumberjacks in scoring as he put up 33 points for the Lumberjacks.

Heading into their match up with the Royals, the Lumberjacks looked to end a three-game losing streak. It wasn't an easy one as the Royals had won the previous two match ups by the scores of 83-59 and 108-83. Things didn't start out well for the Lumberjacks as they trailed by 19 points at one point. Trimming the game down to single digits midway through the fourth quarter, the Lumberjacks gave themselves a chance to win the game. It wasn't until the final minutes the Lumberjacks grabbed the lead and finished off the comeback with a 66-65 win over the Royals.

When asked about the game Coach Sorby said, "I am very proud of our guys resilience. We all felt we hadn't played to our best in our two previous matchups with Lake Region, giving up far too many points in each game. After giving up 42 points in the first half in this game, I thought this game was headed in the same direction; however, our guys knew they had to tighten up defensively and rebound better, all of which they did. I am proud of that effort and I told them in the locker room, after the game, how capable this group is."

For the next week the Lumberjacks will be at home, starting off with NHSC Storm on Wednesday and the Mystics from Bismarck State the following night. Going into the weekend, the Lumberjacks will host Dawson Community College Buccaneers on Sunday.
