Jacks Split Opening Weekend

The Lumberjack Women's team opened their season picking up a 5-2 win and then falling 5-4 in a shootout to Minnesota Duluth.

After a scoreless first period Calleja Misson put the Jacks on the board first with an unassisted goal. Duluth would score back-to-back goals to take the lead. DCB answered right back with a pair of goals of their own to retake the lead at 3-2. The first goal came on the powerplay when Carli Durston found the back of the net off a Stephanie Hogan assist. The goal that would give the Jacks the lead back for good also came on the powerplay when Misson scored her second goal of the contest, Kaitlyn Haight and Cameren Rudniski were credited with the assists. The Jacks tacked on two insurance goals in the third both unassisted the first came from Misson giving her the hattrick and the second from Maya Mortensen on the powerplay. The Jacks connected on three of their five powerplay opportunities while their penalty kill killed off eight of the Bulldogs nine opportunities. Riley Richardson picked up the win in net for the Jacks with 31 saves.

In game two on the weekend Cydny Price got the Jacks on the board first with the assist coming from Mortensen. One minute later the Jacks scored on the powerplay, Ffion Devonald scored off assists from Durston, and Macy Wither. The third Lumberjack goal of the period came just 41 seconds later when Danee Crepeele found paydirt Devonald had the assist. Price scored for the second time in the period to close out the scoring for the Jacks. Haight and Misson each picked up an assist. Duluth was able to dig themselves out of a 4-0 hole with a pair of goals in both the second and third periods to tie the game. Neither team was able to score in the extra period, so they went to a shootout. In the shutout Duluth was able to score and earn the win.

The Jacks record sits at 1-0-1-0. Next up the Jacks take part in a home and home series against Lake Region State College. Saturday the Jacks get things started on a rare doubleheader Saturday at 3:30 with the Lumberjack men hosting Lake Region following the conclusion of the women's game. Sunday the Jacks travel to Lake Region to close out the weekend puck drop set for 11:30a.m.
